What to know before you set off, and what you will learn on the spot.

Money

  • Since 1 January 2026 the currency in Bulgaria is the euro. You will still come across old prices in leva on signs in villages for some time. The rate is fixed: 1 euro = 1.95583 leva.
  • Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but in small villages and at the market carry cash too.
  • Tipping: about 10% in restaurants, if you are happy.

Borders and documents

  • Bulgaria has been fully part of the Schengen Area since 1 January 2025. From Austria to Varna you get there without a passport check along the way.

The roads

  • Electronic vignette – mandatory for motorways and most main roads. You can buy it online at bgtoll.bg or at a petrol station.
  • Speed limits: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them, 140 km/h on motorways.
  • The roads are better than their reputation, but the potholes have a life of their own. Drive carefully, especially at night.

Emergencies

  • 112 – the single European emergency number works here too.

Etiquette

  • Yes and No – the head shaking is the other way round. β€œYes” is a head shake from side to side, β€œno” is a nod. If you get confused, say it out loud.
  • Visiting – bring a gift; flowers in an odd number.
  • In church – quiet, with covered shoulders.
  • Cheers – with eye contact.

Taxi drivers in Sofia are a species of their own. Use an app or order by phone from a well-known company. Otherwise you may learn interesting words and high prices at the same time.
