Welcome!

A family website with two faces: an open part about Bulgaria – for everyone – and a private part just for the family.

What's here

About Bulgaria – for everyone

Seven sections on the language, literature, history, geography, travel, the quirks of Bulgarians and the site itself – in Bulgarian, English and German. With humour, an anthology of the classics and links to reliable sources. Plus the family news.

Who made it

The site was created by Ivan Peev – with a lot of help from artificial intelligence (Claude by Anthropic) for the texts, translations and programming, and with invaluable help from relatives for the memories, photos and corrections. Everything has been checked by a human – sometimes twice.

Why

  • To preserve the family's history for our children and grandchildren – so we do not forget our kin.
  • To show Bulgaria to friends, colleagues and relatives who don't speak Bulgarian.
  • To learn something new: the site is also a learning project on how to build a website with AI.

How this site was made β†’

Information for the family

  • Access to the family part is by invitation only. If you are family and don't have an account yet, write to Ivan.
  • Family members log in with a username and password they get from Ivan. The admin account is additionally protected by a code from a phone app.
  • After 30 minutes of inactivity the site logs you out automatically – just in case.
  • The site does not appear in search engines, and the photos and documents in the family part are just for us. Please don't share them without consent.
  • Found a mistake in the family tree or have an old photo? Tell Ivan – the family history keeps growing.

The sections about Bulgaria

I

The Language

Bulgarian is one of the oldest written Slavic languages. It is also the only one that managed to lose almost all of its noun cases and still nobody got confused. Here you will find the alphabet, the grammar, the spelling and a few traps that catch even qualified philologists.

Literature

Bulgarian literature is a lot like Bulgarian banitsa (the flaky cheese pastry): many layers, little butter, frequent tears and unfailing pleasure. From the medieval scribes to the International Booker Prize, here is a short tour – with no compulsory class tests. Poetry, prose and the novel, children's books, humour – and an anthology with the full texts of the classics that are now in the public domain.

III

History

Thirteen centuries of statehood, five centuries of bondage, three kingdoms, one National Revival and countless β€œwhat ifs”. Bulgarian history is like a family album: plenty of heroes, a few embarrassing photos, and one uncle nobody mentions at the dinner table. Turn the pages.

Geography

Bulgaria is small on the map but big on the ground. In a single day you can ski in the morning, have lunch in Plovdiv and swim in the Black Sea in the evening. You will be exhausted, but you will have plenty to talk about.

Travel

Sea, mountains, skiing, monasteries, wine and banitsa – Bulgaria is like a buffet: a bit of everything, and you will definitely go back for seconds. Here are our favourite places, with links for more information. The official tourism portal is bulgariatravel.org.

Fun Facts

A short survival guide to Bulgarians: how we talk, how we nod, what we believe in, what we do at the table, and who we laugh at – mostly ourselves.
