Ran Bosilek (1886–1958)
His real name was Gencho Negentsov. He created “The Patilantsi” („Патиланци“) – the merry adventures of a group of naughty children who still sound like a report from any backyard today. He also retold many folk tales.
Angel Karaliychev (1902–1972)
The master of the short tale. “The Rye Loaf” („Ръжено хлебче“) is perhaps the best-known Bulgarian tale for children, and his animal tales have been read at bedtime for generations.
Elin Pelin
“Yan Bibiyan” („Ян Бибиян“) – the adventures of a disobedient boy who makes friends with the devil Fyut. A warning: children may follow his example.
Leda Mileva (1920–2013)
Poet and translator. Her little poem “The Little White Bunny” („Зайченцето бяло“) has become a song that every Bulgarian child knows.
Folk Tales
Hitar Petar, Kumcho Valcho, Kuma Lisa – the heroes of folk tales are cunning, hungry and forever in trouble. Perfect for bedtime reading and for explaining why you should not trust foxes.
Every Bulgarian remembers at least one children's poem by heart. They usually recite it at weddings – after the second rakia.
