Copyright in Plain Words

In Bulgaria and across the EU, the copyright on a literary work lasts 70 years after the author's death, counted from 1 January of the following year. After that the text becomes public domain – anyone can read, copy and publish it.

That is why in our Anthology we publish full texts only of authors who died more than 70 years ago – Botev, Vazov, Karavelov, Pencho Slaveykov, Yavorov, Debelyanov, Smirnenski and Vaptsarov. For more recent authors we give only descriptions and links to sites where the texts are published with permission.

Websites for Reading

Please note that all of these sites are in Bulgarian.

  • Wikisource (BG) – a free library of public-domain texts. The texts in our Anthology come from here.
  • Chitanka (BG) – a large Bulgarian online library with classics and contemporary authors.
  • LiterNet – an online magazine and publisher of fiction and literary criticism.
  • Slovoto – a virtual library of Bulgarian literature, with texts published with the consent of the authors or their heirs.
  • Project Gutenberg – Botev's poems, in one of the oldest online libraries in the world.

Between us

The classics are free, but reading them still costs something – time. The investment pays back with interest.
